Many students were late to school on the morning of Oct. 27 due to the traffic caused by an officer-involved shooting near the San Gabriel area.

San Gabriel police officers were called in to check out a commercial burglary alarm at 3:37 a.m. They were investigating the 400 block of west Valley Blvd when they noticed a sports vehicle that may have been related to the burglary. The officers proceeded to pull the SUV over due to a traffic violation around 4 a.m.

However, the driver drove off and led the officers on a chase around the city, going into Rosemead then back to San Gabriel. The SUV driver stopped at the 100 block of west Saxon Ave., a dead-end. Both the suspect and police officers stepped out of their mobiles. Seeing the suspect pull out an object and aim it towards the officers, one police officer fired his gun but missed.

Subsequently, the suspect ran towards Del Mar Ave. and the westbound Freeway 10. The offramps and onramps on the freeway were closed to prevent the suspect from escaping, causing the traffic.

The suspect was found and apprehended on the scene at 9:25 a.m.

The resulted traffic affected many students’ morning routines. Junior Yvonne Van, who lived one street behind where it occurred, shares her thoughts.

“I was surprised that the police wouldn’t let my family leave our street to go to school and work,” Van said. “I felt scared knowing that a person with a gun was only a street away from where I lived.”

It was only until two hours after that the police allowed the Van family to exit their house. When Van arrived at school, she missed the first two periods.

Because of this incident, teachers were lenient towards unpunctuality, and the school day was more interesting than a regular one.
