In September, juniors Emily Su and Michael Wang realized that there was no club in San Gabriel High School (SGHS) to represent the diversity of cultures in the community, especially Asian Americans. A few months later, they were able to get their new club, Asian American Association (AAA) approved under math teacher Ronnie Woo.

AAA aims to bring together students from different backgrounds into a “comfortable environment where individuals can express themselves while learning about others’ cultural experiences.” The club hopes to help students from any background prepare for college.

“Our main purpose,” Su said, “is just to have a welcome space where everybody can express themselves and also learn about other people and different cultures and traditions.”

The club hopes that this will give students the opportunity to Asian Americans and other minorities, as well as the rest of the student body.

“Sometimes, colleges avoid us [because we’re Asian],” junior Jiaxin Li said. “We can use [this] advantage to earn more chances for ourselves.”

In the near future, they hope to confront the issues that students have in cultural identity.

“Although [Asians] are a minority in the United States,” Su said, “there are so many of us around the campus, [and] no place that we can go to and feel comfortable about who we are.”

AAA will meet up every other Wednesday. The next meeting will be on Oct. 26.
