TV show review: Beyond

With a range of television shows on the channel Freeform, Beyond is a new addition to it. The drama series also includes supernatural aspects to the plot. The show premiered on Jan. 2 with a back to back episode.
It is basically a show about a 12-year-old boy named Holden Matthews (Burkely Duffield) who gets into an incident that knocked him into a coma. He is awaken at 24-years-old and has difficulties managing his evolved life.
My initial reaction after coming across the trailer was that the show was science fiction based, mysterious, supernatural, electrifying, and cool. Looking back, I would rate it— based on the trailer alone— an 8 out of 10. The trailer did its job of grabbing my attention.
After watching the first two episodes, I felt that I was less interested. I struggled comprehending roughly 45 minutes of the show. In my opinion, there were just really absurd supernatural actions and I could not keep up.
Matthews is shown as a science and astronomy obsessed preteen who becomes a part of a late night incident that threw him into a dozen year coma. He wakes up very well and ready unlike normal people with comas, who wake up unresponsive for a period of time. He then struggles to adjust to his family due to the fact that his parents and younger brother have lived the 12 years he was in the coma.
What happened after was interesting for some 20 seconds of the 45 minutes of the first back to back episode. It made me realize why the show is called Beyond and how Matthews could be danger, or so a mysterious girl says when she shows up. There are shocking moments, and profounding actions that question your own loyalty to any character of the show in relation to Matthews.
Beyond airs every Monday on Freeform at 9 p.m. and it can also be viewed on Freeform’s website. I recommend this show to those who enjoy the supernatural genre as well as conspiracy theories.
