Known for her two hair buns, white dress, and gun-wielding sass, Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia Organa was brought back to the big screen with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, fans everywhere felt tremendous sorrow when word arrived that Fisher had a heart attack on Dec. 23, 2016 on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Fans were further crushed to learn, just four days later, that Fisher had passed away at the age of 60, with all signs pointing to her heart attack.

“I feel a bit sad, but I’ve never really watched the movie before,” junior Cindy Tan said.

Immediately following news of Fisher’s death, fans all over the globe held various tributes to commemorate the actress. The most well known was held inside the Star Wars video game, “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” where a fan on the game created an avatar with Princess Leia’s likeness.

Players from all over the world traveled in-game to see the avatar, paying their respects by having their avatars kneel, wave, hold their lightsabers and guns to the sky, and set off fireworks in front of the avatar Leia.

Fans of the Star Wars universe outside of the game paid tribute by gathering at Universal Studios, Disneyland, and other locations featuring Star Wars set ups to hold lightsaber vigils, pointing their multicolored sabers to the sky for hours on end.

“I’ve seen a few of [the tributes],” senior Nicholas Ly said. “I’ve also seen some of the amazing artwork [fans have made].”

Aside from her notability in the Star Wars franchise, she has been in other productions, such as When Harry Met Sally, and has worked on the scripts of other productions like Outbreak and The Wedding Singer. Aside from her work in the film industry, she has also been a strong advocate for mental health, having suffered from manic depressive disorder herself.

Fisher has already been cremated and will be buried with her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, who died almost 24 hours after Fisher. Though no date has been released for the private burial, fans will continue to mourn the loss of two of Hollywood’s queens on the big screen.
