Steel Magnolias play review

Last week, I came to terms with myself and decided to watch the San Gabriel play, Steel Magnolias, hosted by the Drama Club and directed by drama teacher Patrick Posada. Before watching the play, I did not know what Steel Magnolias was about, other than the fact that it was an all-female cast and a remake. The story takes place in a small southern town community with a band of six women who meet at different periods of their life in a beauty salon, specifically Truvy’s Beauty Salon.

Walking into the Little Theater was like entering into an exclusive club. The waiting room was dim and there were people guarding the entrance; it was just all-in-all not a conventional place to be. Once I got my tickets approved, I was allowed to walk into the playroom. The set, put to life by Tech Theater, from the seating was gleaming.

When the play began, the lights dimmed to a pitch-black. In the darkness, the play commenced with a radio playing and gradually, the lights illuminated the room. Before my eyes stood two actresses who recited their lines wistfully. As more actresses came on set, the rest of the play cascaded. The set, ensemble, and production was unreal. The flow was something I would watch in pre-recorded television, and the energy was something out of the ordinary. Overall, the ambience was amazing.

The entirety was comedic and theatrical. The story does not have a conventional plot and if gender diversity is your cup of tea, you should expand and try other teas like this all-female play. If you are looking for a plot-driven play to watch, this might not be your type of gig. As aforementioned, you should try other types of teas, and you might like it. For just eight dollars a ticket, I would recommend watching Drama Club’s Steel Magnolias and future plays.
