Designated Survivor: Review

In the event of an emergency, one cabinet member is always hidden during an important meeting or something; in case something happens to the President and/or Congress. That member is referred to as the ‘designated survivor’. Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) is the “Designated Survivor” on ABC’s new hit show, and he kicks his story off with a really bad day.

First, he goes to the White House to his duty as Secretary of Housing and Development. Whilst there, he is informed he will be removed from his job the next day, and will become an ambassador to another country, despite his support and friendship with the old President himself. He also suddenly begins to realize he’s having problems within his family, throwing his home into a mess. Before Kirkman must lose his job, though, it is his duty as a cabinet member to be taken to an undisclosed location for the State of the Union that evening.

Halfway through the State of the Union that evening, Kirkman watches in horror from afar, as the Capitol building goes up in flames; taking everyone inside with it. Destroying the Capitol building, rescue teams and the FBI and all sorts of other associations must convene to rescue whoever may have survived, and hunt down the vicious attackers that demolished the country’s leadership.

One particular FBI agent, Hannah Wells (Maggie Q), is heavily affected by the loss of a loved one in the blast and doesn’t believe any known terrorist organizations are behind the assault, but no one else believes her in this continuously expanding and hard-to-accept theory. Kirkman and the rest of the world, now face the shocking reality that he is now the President of the United States of America, with no cabinet underneath him, and secrets and deception all around him, in the nation’s darkest hour.

I believe ABC does an excellent job of creating a frightened nation during a time of crisis; with an even more terrified leader. There is plenty of room to expand the story, with dozens of secrets, double agents, and enemies to challenge an indecisive president like Kirkman. Designated Survivor is on at 9/10pm Wednesday nights on ABC.
