For the past few weeks, Maui residents have continued to mourn the devastation of their homeland. The wildfire crisis began with a small bushfire that rapidly escalated. It began closing in on populated areas, leaving only acres of scorched land. During this time, residents are slowly working to pick up the pieces of their shattered homes and lives.

This disaster has coerced communities to come together. Local authorities, alongside various non-profit organizations and volunteers, have been working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by the Maui wildfires.. Furthermore, the collaborative response extends to psychological support and counseling services, recognizing the emotional toll this crisis has taken on survivors.

State and federal agencies have also been contributing to the cause. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), they have already offered numerous loans to small businesses, housing and $700 payments for those who qualify. Additionally, resources have been sent to fight wildfires and assist local authorities. This includes fire crews, helicopters and additional personnel to help with containment operations. Although, despite the efforts, Maui residents say the aid they have received is hardly enough. The lack of ministration has caused  Federals to receive heavy criticism. Nicole Manalang-Ruiz, a history teacher here in San Gabriel High, believes that the initial response from the government was “too slow.”

“I could understand under the circumstances the people of Maui were desperate for any type of help they could get,” she said. “As a citizen of the United States, you hope that the government will help you when a situation like this happens, but it’s frustrating when you have to go through all these hoops just to get the help that you need. I just hope the local and state government do what they can to make sure that the land stays with the people”

While the Maui wildfires have left a trail of destruction, they have also proved the incredible resilience and unity of the Maui community. Together, they are hope and assistance to those affected, emphasizing the strength that rises from people standing together in times of crisis.
