ILLUSTRATION BY ZUYUAN ZHOU, The modern fashion world is constantly changing. However, some of these trends do not work for all body types. As a result, those who follow such trends without a grounded baseline could lose their style in an ocean of fashion opportunities.

Working with body types

The basics to understanding body types are sharpness and softness in the human form. The goal is to not fight one’s natural form, but to embrace it. It is also noted that these body types are not enforcing what one should wear, but rather explaining why some clothing decisions do not work as well on one individual compared to another.

On one far side of the spectrum is the dramatic body type. This body type tends to be long-limbed and lanky. A dramatic body type does not entirely mean the person is tall. They are narrow, straight, and sharp. They tend to have a very straight stature. Dramatics look great in consistent, low contrast, and unbroken lines. Geometric and sharp clothes compliments their body type more than soft, round clothes.

On the other hand, on the opposite side of the spectrum is the romantic body type. Unlike the dramatics, this body type generally contains more curves on the face and body, giving the rest of the body a soft and lush look. On top of that, their bone structures are delicate. Clothes that compliment this body type are clothes that have soft or airy fabrics and overall support the curves. Someone with a romantic body type should avoid stiff designs.

These two body types are only two of many more that derive from Davd Kibbe’s book, Metamorphosis. Like previously mentioned, Romantics and Dramatics stand on each end of the spectrum. The body types that lie between the two contain a mix of both of them. In other words, it can take a lot of experimentation to find what type of clothes look good on oneself. At the same time, it is important to remember to dress for oneself and not someone else. Dress in what makes one feel comfortable and confident because at the end of the day, the only body one has is their own.
