In the digital age, intercultural communication and understanding between people of different tongues have become more important than ever. In an effort to build a more multicultural community, it is extremely important and thoughtful that the school district has implemented dual immersion for the younger generation.

It is much easier for a young child to pick up a language if it is taught to them like it would be taught to a native speaker. The current foreign language program is not so much about teaching the language but translating English to another language. This is an ineffective way of getting somebody to become fluent as the system does not encourage students to think in the language, but to translate things from English. With dual immersion, children with limited knowledge of English are taught two languages at the same time, without having to learn one through another. This better prepares children for advanced level courses and conversations with native speakers.

In a rapidly developing world, it is of the utmost importance that the youth develop a globally-oriented mindset. A big step towards that goal is being able to communicate with people from different parts of the world. Dual immersion at a young age will create a generation of bilingual people who will be in touch with foreign cultures and customs, helping to create a more connected and understanding world. The opportunities that arise with learning a new language are also endless. Working overseas, or even in many domestic industries, requires bilingualism, and it is very proactive that the school district is taking steps to make sure that every door is open for all students.

In America, a society that has adopted the English language on every level, it might seem useless to learn a second, minority language. However, it is much more useful than most classes that society has deemed acceptable and useful. Subjects like history and math are seldom used by those who do not seek a career in such fields. However, a language is a form of communication, a means of conversation, and mutual understanding. It is a tool that can be used on a daily basis and provides endless opportunities to individuals who possess it. It will never be redundant, it will never become specialized, it is the soul of the people. There are so many more real-life situations that require the understanding of a second language than there will ever be situations that require extensive knowledge of chemistry or art. The implementation of dual immersion is one of the district’s greatest successes and will benefit the people and the community as long as it is up and running.
