Warning! We have entered the sassy man apocalypse!
Is this just a tiktok trend or is there an actual apocalypse occurring of sassy men? The idea of a “sassy man apocalypse” seems obscure, however, it appears it may be a reality. Men are not often referred to as sassy; women are often the receivers of the “sassy” label, especially in a relationship. This can cause a clash in understanding as how can a woman be sassy and a man just be smart.
The sassy man apocalypse was declared on Twitter, now X, by @yattadondada in August 2022, when she posted, “We in a sassy man apocalypse.” When using sassy in this context, it generally describes men who display a bit of an attitude or actions that are generally considered feminine. There’s still plenty of discussions about what it means to be “sassy” and the term is still loosely defined in this context.
Either way, men are now embodying a sassy energy that was once only available to women. They roll their eyes, they purse their lips. This has drawn criticism from some women because what do men have to be sassy about? Most of the men featured in the videos are the partners of the filmer (almost always a woman) who have been asked to perform a simple favor. Some women argue that they have it worse, and it’s hard to disagree. Women are paid less, they have male politicians making life changing decisions about their bodies, and they still have to deal with convoluted beauty standards.
Regardless, the sassy man apocalypse can be seen as a good thing. It can be seen as men rejecting toxic masculinity and machismo culture and embracing their feminine side. This so-called “sassy man apocalypse” can simply be seen as men finally being in touch with the emotions and personalities they’ve so long been told to suppress. After all, doesn’t the patriarchy affect us all?
