Alongside the new hairstyles (much better than the ones in season one) season two of Young Royals, released Nov. 1, presents its audience with more drama. One is a new love interest for one of the main characters Simon (Omar Rudberg). This new love interest steals Simon from his boyfriend Wilhem (Edvin Ryding) for a while after season one placed Wilhelm in a sticky situation.

The icing on the cake is August (Malte Gardinger), who is experiencing Wilhem’s wrath after his actions in season one of Young Royals. August constantly seeks forgiveness from Wilhelm after betraying his kindness, but it is to no avail; Wilhelm aims to make August’s life a “living hell.” In season one, August became a character that people easily hated, but with the new season two, some fans could even sympathize with him.

Season two of Young Royals was no longer focusing on young love. Instead, it was about a time in the relationship when both lovers had to keep the flame and their love for each other alive while facing the challenges life threw at them. Since Wilhelm is the crown prince of Sweden, the next in line to the throne, he would lose a lot from his relationship with Simon, another man. That is why the royal court and his family are placing harsh expectations on Wilhelm this season, adding to his plate of problems. On the other hand, Simon does not want to be part of any secret relationship; hence, he has been avoiding Wilhelm and got with another person.

Additionally, this season was about moving out the old for the new. The private school the characters attend have their traditions, some of which are different from actual rules because they are systems set up by the previous class years. Simon is one of the few students not born into a wealthy family like most students in the institution, and Wilhelm recognizes this but does not let it deter him from being with Simon. In other words, his love for Simon ignores the traditions his predecessors placed upon the society they reside. That is what I think is very beautiful about their relationship.

Overall, I enjoyed the new season of Young Royals, which showed the characters maturing after returning from their winter break. I liked how Wilhelm demonstrated growth as he chose to be who he wants to be despite what society says or will say about his image; he is willing to do whatever it takes to be with Simon, even at the cost of his own crown. Before watching this new season, I prayed the show would use a song as powerful as “Revolution” by Elias from season one. The music was good, but it did not spark like “Revolution.” Despite the music not being my favorite part of the show, one thing Young Royals continues to do, that I love a lot, is how they make the people feel real by capturing the awkwardness of being a teenager. I am sure many can relate. Lastly, this show does a great job at showing what real skin is like. Their actors are not covered in layers of makeup; instead, the film allows their natural skin to show.
