“KATY TIGERS KICKOFF ” CC/BY 2.0, PHILIP SHOFFNER, A traditional take on one of America’s beloved sports, football. Even though volleyball and football still have theory classes, many other sports still do not, giving an unfair disadvantage to those looking to invest more time into their sport.

Theory classes beneficial to students, athletes

Sports theory is a class that teaches student athletes about the foundations of their sport, its requirements, and its benefits. The class also focuses on the social aspect of working as a team. However, with the absence of such a subject, it puts athletes at a disadvantage, especially for those who want to invest more of their time into a sport. Essentially, all theory classes teach students about the important factors of being involved in sports, making it would be beneficial for students to be able to enroll in a sports theory class of their choice.

Sports theory classes are typically held during the sixth period slot and are taught by the respective coach of each sport. The amount of sports theory classes this year has been reduced, likely due to the amount of students who ditch the classes. Fewer students actively engaging in the classes is likely one of the reasons why the school decided to cut them entirely for the school year.

Yet, students in sports teams tend to receive further guidance from their coaches and train often. The lack of the guidance that is provided from sports theory classes could hinder the performance of students. Without proper training or insight on the sport they want to play, a student is less likely to have a  future in that sport.

While having more sports theory classes may be unnecessary for experienced players, it is quite valuable for those with an interest in a sport. In order to have more sports theory classes, the school would need experienced coaches for each sport, which would be costly.

Some students rely on sports theory to gain further knowledge about their chosen sport. Others enjoy having a class to simply relax in. Whether or not students attend these classes, it would be beneficial to have a sports theory class for every sport at the school, providing equal opportunities for all athletes.
