From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the U.S. celebrates Latine Heritage Month (more commonly known as Hispanic Heritage Month). Beginning on the day beforeMexican Independence Day, Latine Heritage Month is a time to share and celebrate the diverse cultures of Central and South America. The celebration of Latine cultures is beneficial to everyone, Latine or not, because its presence helps build acceptance and tolerance among communities across the nation.

Many history classes focus primarily on the Western world, with very few in-depth lessons on the histories of many parts of the world. Latine Heritage Month acts as a time where people can learn about the past and developments of Latin American nations and cultures. Opportunities to learn about Latine history can help build a better understanding on what shaped the cultures of both the San Gabriel Valley and LA county’s populations.

Even with a largely Latine population, misinformation and misconceptions can still spread. A national celebration like Latine Heritage Month gives a larger platform for people to combat misinformation and share more accurate facts about cultures, histories, and their people. Along with stopping the spread of misconceptions, Latine voices can share more about their culture via sharing historical information, practices, art, and culture.

Despite living in a largely-Latine state, many Californians may not have personally experienced the culture. Latine Heritage Month gives many people the opportunity to indulge in the discovery of cultures and practices that they otherwise may never have interacted with. The respectful exchange of cultural practices helps broaden worldviews  and weaken beliefs in stereotypes.

Opponents of Latine Heritage Month claim that it is no longer necessary in the modern day, as other cultures are accepted and treated equally within the United States. Although that may be true, it does not justify the removal of the month as a national holiday. Continued acceptance of Latine cultures is assisted through public opinion on them, and Latine Heritage Month helps with keeping such traditions and cultures alive within the U.S., preventing them from being alienated by the rest of the population.

Latine Heritage Month is generally a positive for Latine Americans within the country. It helps maintain a culturally equal view of Latine people and assists others to learn of the history that shaped Latine cultures into their modern form. It also is paramount in sharing cultures with people that would otherwise know little to nothing about them, ensuring that Latine cultures stay alive and are accepted across the nation.
