With less time to teach, many teachers in distance learning have resorted to assigning more homework to make up for lost class time. The increased amount of homework assigned is concerning because not only are the students not intaking any new knowledge from busy work, they are also getting stressed over the amount of work they have to complete.

It is generally harder to focus in a distance learning environment compared to learning in-person class learning. Students in 2020 are having a tough time adjusting to a learning environment where they have so many distractions around them at all times. Family, technology, and pets are all factors that distract a student. Teachers need to take this into consideration and assign meaningful homework in fewer amounts in order to help students truly understand the lesson more.

Some students may already be having trouble to balance their lives during quarantine. The year has brought students a multitude of things to worry about, like wildfires, politics, and staying healthy, all while being unable to safely step outside their doors. The sheer amount of factors that can cause stress in a student’s life this year is something to consider when assigning homework. Excessive homework does nothing but add more stress to an already stressful year for students.

Historically, homework has served a purpose inbeing a refresher for what was taught in class, However, distance learning has shifted its emphasis on meeting deadlines over learning. Homework should not be assigned without the necessary lesson to supplement them as students cannot learn from homework they do not understand. Teachers need to be more considerate of each student’s situation and find a way to assign less work while allowing the lessons to be more memorable. One possible way to make this happen is to have more interactive ,class time. Most lectures end up being the teachers talking to a screen with no responses. Getting more students involved in a lesson will no doubtedly leave a longer lasting imprint of the lesson in their minds. This makes homework much easier for the students while making repetitive busywork obsolete.
