On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character or the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the constitution, my community, and the agency I serve.”

That is the oath taken by the U.S. law enforcement body after joining the police force. Breaking or disobeying this oath is a crime and can and should result in the loss of an officer’s badge. This should apply to all officers; Beat cops, S.W.A.T. teams, Captains, Chiefs, and Sheriffs and their deputies. Sheriff Joe Arpaio however, seems as though he’s beyond that oath.

Accused and proven to be abusing his power for cruel and racist purposes, the Sheriff was sentenced to prison after his wrongful operations such as targeting illegal immigrants as the top security threat to his Arizona district. He wasted department resources hunting down immigrants, who regardless of whether they had a clean track record, was completely illegal ad out of his authority.

Despite this he was still granted a Presidential pardon. President Trump believed that he had been arrested for simply, “doing his job”, so the President went around the judicial process and pardoned him. That is unacceptable on many levels. One reason is it’s a poor decision considering that most of the public already regards the President as a racist. Another could be that the Sheriff is a criminal racist who doesn’t deserve a pardon, or another the fact that he set up a prison made of tents in the Arizona desert for the illegal immigrants he illegally arrested.

Obviously, the President isn’t the first to issue a controversial pardon. But the President should be able to tell what kind of man deserves a pardon. This Sheriff wouldn’t be on the list of candidates for pardons, but Trump pardoning him shows a side of him many are trying to ignore; a racist. That is a nasty word that sadly fits as a description here. For both the President, and the corrupt Sheriff.
