Working Towards the Future (WTTF), a club dedicated to helping students with the college process, hosted a field trip to the Claremont colleges on Sept. 30. The trip was made possible through several fundraisers, resulting in no fee for club members.

Over 30 students attended this field trip. They were divided into two groups: one that went to Harvey Mudd College and one that went to Pitzer College.

According to WTTF adviser Melissa Bishop, Harvey Mudd is focused on STEM (sciences, technology, engineering, and math); while Pitzer is focused on humanities, having “a strong digital media program and a social justice oriented structure.”

Afterward, students were given campus tours and had lunch at Scripps College, an all girls university.

Subsequently, they were offered the opportunity to go to either Harvey Mudd or Pitzer for an information session, led by the college students themselves.

“I went to the Pitzer tour of the campus,” junior Emily Su said. “But for the information meeting, I went to Harvey Mudd because I wanted to get a feeling for both schools.”

The interaction between club members and student speakers during the campus tours and information sessions allowed for an insightful discussion. It helped build knowledge for members who do not know what type of college they want to attend.

“It just makes me feel better [knowing] that more students like me can get the opportunity to visit and know more about top colleges,” senior Juan Cai said. “This field trip opened my mind to schools other than UCs, and I would really like other people to think like that as well.”

Bishop also believes students acquired a good insight from communicating with the student speakers and shares her thoughts on them.

“The students who gave the tours and information sessions from these colleges were phenomenal,” Bishop said. “They were exciting to watch, [thinking] about what students who get in there can grow to be. They were great representatives of what these colleges produce in students so I was very, very impressed by the student speakers.”

Gaining both experience and knowledge from this field trip, senior Josef Del Mundo summarizes the trip.

“It’s not solely knowing about what that college is, but based on your own knowledge, you can compare it to other colleges too,” Mundo said.

WTTF is planning another field trip later this month, but this time, the destination will be Occidental College.
