Education is key to a bright future. Arriving to high school is one step closer to a bright future. Sure, one is skilled with the necessities of getting through the school system after nine years or so of going to school. How do students really feel about their four years of high school?

After being promoted from eighth to ninth grade, the game changes; they grow up and go through puberty while getting through the chaos that is their freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior years in high school. With high school already being stereotyped and labeled from movies such as Mean Girls, Mean Girls 2, and High School Musical, incoming high school students ponder about high school– is it like the movies, better than middle school, or fun?

It is very important to understand that high school is not like how it is portrayed on the big screen, but rather is what you make of it. High school is supposed to be more fun than stressful for any grade level, whether it be freshman or senior year. Because if you think about it, nearly everyone from your family, ancestors, neighbors, siblings, and strangers have gone to high school all four years.

“I would have to say that the one word to sum up high school would be fun!” sophomore Sonam Huang said. “No matter what happens, it’s all about how you view it. Even if it’s an insanely difficult test that takes you four hours to prepare for, the feeling when you receive a good score after a long night of hard work is absolutely indescribable. Not to mention, you can always take a break when you feel stressful by participating in volunteer clubs that help not only the community but yourself as well. The amazing clubs, people, classes, and activities that add up to a fun high school experience definitely outnumbers the stressful challenges everyone faces in high school.”

Huang continues to describe her own experience in high school now that she is that the peak of her high school career.

“Since I’ve started high school, high school has been pretty amazing for me,” Huang said. “Although there has been ups and downs, I enjoyed each and every single new experiences.”

Huang specifically reminisces on the experiences she had so far from her freshmen year alone.

“From having to stay up past midnight to finish a long assignment that no one in the class could quite understand to getting voted into Sophomore Class Council, high school has taught me a lot and allowed me to engage in activities I would never have dreamed of participating in before,” Huang said.

A second note on what high school is supposed to be like, is a journey from the start to the end. Junior Xochitl Flores gave her definition of a high school experience.

“It’s actually pretty great, I can definitely say high school has been a roller coaster, but my perspective on it has really changed,” Flores said. “Freshman year I wasn’t exactly thrilled about high school, but now as a junior I can honestly say I love it. I felt anxious to enter high school, that’s the only emotion I remember feeling [in the summer before freshman year]. The only expectation I had, and was excited about, was having a locker. I was really disappointed when I found out we don’t use lockers.”

High school must be displayed as a positive environment where students come and go, come to learn and experience, go with life lessons and lifelong memories or friends. Nowadays, teenagers around the high school age are almost constantly on their electronic devices and disregarding others around them. It has to change. If high school were a place where students gain memories rather than lose themselves, then it would be exactly what high school is supposed to be like.
