Note: Article has been updated below with confirmed attendance figures.

An estimated 50 students skipped school today in protest of Principal Debbie Stone’s decision to not renew Chris Kwan’s physical education teaching contract for the 2016-17 school year. This figure is unconfirmed and was told to The Matador by a varsity volleyball player. From student anecdotal accounts: approximately 10 students were absent from a government class, six from an English class, five from a statistics class. Because the school day has not ended yet, these figures are unconfirmed. This occurrence may or may not be a one time deal as the students continue to figure out their future plans and attempt to reverse Kwan’s dismissal, according to a varsity volleyball player who wishes to stay anonymous.

Junior Chris Bell observed the absences at lunch time. “Usually, I see a lot of volleyball kids hanging by the gym, but today there weren’t as many,” he said.

UPDATE: 3:56 p.m.  Eighty students more than usual were absent from San Gabriel High School today. On average 130 students are absent per day at the school; today, there was a total of 210 students absent.
